Dutch speed skaters again dominated the European speed skating championships in Heerenveen this weekend, picking up 22 of the 42 medals and sweeping the board twice. The Dutch women won all seven golds open to them and the men three.
Marijke Groenewoud was queen of the competition with three gold medals, collecting the third on Sunday with a powerful finish in the mass start.
Earlier on Sunday she had clinched her second title in the team pursuit together with Irene Schouten and Joy Beune. In between,Β Jutta LeerdamΒ won her third straight European gold in the 1000 metres.Β
On Saturday, the Dutch women won five of six available medals. Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong, Marijke Groenewoud and Joy Beune swept the 1500 metres podium, while Femke Kok and Jutta Leerdam took gold and silver in the 500 metres.
The Dutch women also won the team sprint title. Marijke Groenewoud and Irene Schouten won gold and silver in the 3,000 metres and the men β Kjeld Nuis, Jenning de Boo and Tim Prins β swept the board in the 1000 metres.
Jenning de Boo, taking part in his first championships at the age of 19, won gold in the 500 metres while Patrick Roest won gold in the 5,000 metres. The men also took bronze in both the team sprint and team pursuit events.
