Dutch police have arrested a Dutch national in connection with the attack on Spanish former politician Alejo Vidal Quadras in Madrid on November 9 last year, Spanish media reported.

Vidal Quadras (78), who is the former leader of the right-wing political party Partido Popular and co-founder of extreme-right political party Vox, was shot in the jaw and barely survived.

The woman, who is being held on suspicion of planning and financing the attack, is the fifth person to be arrested in the case. One suspect was arrested in Colombia while three others, one of them a British national, were arrested in Southern Spain.

Police are still looking for the man who police said pulled the trigger, Mehrez Avari, a French citizen of Tunisian background.

Spanish police have not commented on the possible motive for the attack but Vidal Quadras has always maintained it had been ordered by the Iranian government because of his links with the opposition in that country.

The Dutch public prosecution office has not yet confirmed the arrest.
