Police are investigating the death of a baby that was found in a car parked on an industrial estate in Rotterdam.

Emergency services were called to the site on Vlaardingweg at around 5pm. The infant was alive but in poor health and paramedics were unable to save its life.

The Telegraaf reported that a passer-by smashed the rear windscreen of the car, a grey Audi with Belgian registration plates, to try to rescue the child before the ambulance arrived.

One eyewitness told the newspaper: β€œWe think some glass struck the baby, but to be honest I think it was too late and the baby was not getting air.”

Police said a man had been arrested at the scene and was being questioned, but would not go into details about his involvement in the incident.

β€œThe priority for us now is the investigation,” a spokesman said. β€œWe are looking into exactly what happened.”
