A man accused of stabbing a man to death and wounding another on a bridge in Rotterdam has been remanded in custody for another two weeks while investigations continue.

Ayoub M., 22, attacked 32-year-old German national Philipp Winter while he was roller skating on the Erasmusbrug on Thursday evening. His other victim, a 33-year-old Swiss man, was released from hospital on Sunday after treatment.

M. has been charged with murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors say the stabbings may have been motivated by terrorism because M. was heard to shout β€œAllah Akbhar” (β€œGod is great”) several times as he attacked his victims with two knives.

M., from Amersfoort, has a previous conviction for attacking his mother with a knife two years ago, leaving her with severe injuries to her hands and neck. He was given a compulsory treatment order by a court.

An examining magistrate in The Hague ordered him to be detained on remand. The case was not heard in Rotterdam because several witnesses to the incident were staff at the city’s district court.
