The Netherlands has confirmed it will take part in the international mission to protect shipping in the southern Red Sea from attacks by the Houthis.
The βmultinational security initiativeβ, named Operation Prosperity Guardian, aims to provide security to cargo shipping in the region, which has been coming under attack from the Islamic political group and militia operating out of Yemen.
Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Norway, Spain Bahrain and the Seychelles will also take part in the mission, according to theΒ US defence minister Lloyd Austin. βThis is an international challenge which requires collective action,β he told reporters.
Dutch defence Kajsa Ollongren said on social media on Tuesday that the Netherlands would second two staff officers to operation Prosperity Guardian.
βThe attacks on shipping in the Red Sea undermine freedom of navigation and are a serious threat to ships and crews. Under US leadership, NL and many likeminded partners are joining forces to secure free and safe navigation,β Ollongren said.
