WASHINGTON, Jan 21 – Donald Trump’s advisers have discussed the possibility of having Trump sign an executive order to “save” TikTok immediately after his swearing-in at the Capitol Rotunda, in the presence of the app’s Chinese CEO and lawmakers who supported the bill to ban it as a national security threat. Politico reports that such a move would only heighten tensions with key Republican legislators who passed the bill that led to the app’s brief shutdown on Sunday.
The anticipated presence of TikTok CEO Shou Chew at the inauguration ceremony, Politico adds, is already causing unease among some Republicans, and acting to delay any consequences for the company in front of lawmakers could exacerbate their frustration Signing executive orders is not typical during inauguration ceremonies; new presidents usually do so later in the day after arriving at the White House.
